Cholera is an infection spread mainly through food and water that can cause acute watery diarrhoea. Cholera activity varies by location within each country. In areas with cholera outbreaks, travellers should avoid unsafe food and water and wash their hands often to help prevent cholera.

The full course needs to be completed at least one week before travelling.

The vaccine will last 2 years, after that a booster dose is required.

Two doses given at least one week apart. 

The vaccine is given as a drink and therefore you should avoid eating and drinking, and taking medication for at least one hour before having the vaccination.

Common side effects include fever, digestive problems and headaches.

The vaccine is suitable for children over the age of 2.

In addition to getting vaccinated you need to practise good hand, food and water hygiene. 

Cholera can cause digestive problems such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting and lead to dehydration. This can be fatal in children and the elderly.
