Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an infection spread by tick bites. Ticks that spread it are found in parts of Europe and Asia, and some parts of the UK.
Check if you could be at risk of TBE
The risk of getting TBE is very low.
Ticks that spread it can be found in:
- Most of Europe – including parts of England
- Russia
- Parts of China and Japan
Ticks live in forests and grassy areas. You're more at risk of being bitten if you
do activities such as hiking and camping.
Not all ticks spread TBE. Even if you're bitten, the risk of getting seriously ill is
low.
Tick-Borne Encephalitis
£65 per dose
2 dose(s) required
To have some level of protection, a minimum of 2 doses is required, with the
second dose to be given at least 2 weeks before travel. Therefore ideally this
course of vaccines should be started two months prior to travelling.
Once a course of 3 doses is completed, the vaccine will provide 3 years
protection.
A full course consists of 3 doses.
The vaccine is usually given as an injection in your upper arm.
Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, tiredness and
headache.
The vaccine is suitable for children over the age of 12 months.
In addition to getting vaccinated you need to practise bite avoidance.
Serious complications including inflammation of the brain.
