Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. You catch hepatitis A by swallowing the virus in food or drink that contains it, or touching your mouth with your hands that have picked up the virus from touching infected faeces.

At least two weeks prior to travelling, however if you do not have this much time, it is possible to still get vaccinated.
The vaccine will protect you for 1 year, however if a second dose is given 6-12 months of the first dose, it will provide protection for 20 years.
One dose.
The vaccine is given as an injection in the upper arm.
Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, fever, tiredness and soreness.
The vaccine is suitable for children over age of 16. Paediatric Hepatitis A vaccine is available for children over the age of 1
Hepatitis A can cause mild to severe symptoms such as digestive problems. However can lead to liver failure.
Vaccination against hepatitis A is recommended for:
- All people travelling to countries where the risk of hepatitis A is high
- Certain people who are at higher risk of infection from their job or lifestyle, or have an increased chance of becoming severely ill with the infection, such as:
- Men who have sex with other men
- People who inject illegal drugs
- Close contacts of someone with hepatitis A
- People who may be exposed to hepatitis A through their job
